  1. My husband passed away almost four years ago, and I was left with a garage and basement full of tools that I knew nothing about. I know a wrench from a hammer and screwdriver, of course, but there were so many specialty items, types of saws, nails, wrenches, etc. and unfinished projects and cans of paint, etc. It is still a work in progress, and it has brought me to tears more than once. I would like to urge men to teach and for women to learn the basics of what things are, what they are used for, and how expensive they are. Keep your manuals and receipts with each item or at least label them so you can google them. It is hard to sell something if you don’t have a clue what it is or how to price it. Otherwise, your $500 item might be on the yard sale table for $2. Hope this helps someone.

    1. If you (or anyone else you know) has access to Google Lens on your phone, it can help visually identify the tools and where to buy them, so you’d also see the cost. Hope this helps!

    2. I experienced the same thing due the death of my dad and then a one day accident/death of my husband. The garage was like yours but also had things for hunting, fishing, carving, leather work, car maintenance, cutting wood, building, etc. Things were not together – as in attachments, manuals, receipts, etc. Luckily, the carving club, a shop teacher, a sales clerk from Sears, friends and handymen – helped me. It took years. My dad died in 1991 and my husband in 2001 and I still have “stuff”.

  2. Thank You for the important information. Too bad husbands don’t “teach their wives to be widows” while they are still able. Their shared knowledge is like life or medical insurance. It is not a focus until it is needed.
