  1. 50-30-20 is interesting.
At 81 – my essentials and needs are easy as house and vehicle, furniture, appliances, etc. are all paid for. In every 12 months I have three places to live and more places to visit.
The “wants” section is also interesting – reading, watching, writing, gardening, celebrating milestones of family and friends and summer at a cabin on a lake. Comfortable clothing is all that I really need or want.
The “savings” does not apply as I want to build the good society and so a fair amount of money goes to regular monthly political contributions, to charity and institutions that promote progressive changes, and to helping locally when needs occur especially in the arts communities. I also am generous with my adult children, my six grandchildren and my friends, because I have no need to save anything more than I already have. I can afford to “give” and give generously.
I do appreciate the advice you give to younger folks. I realize that I am privileged.

  2. I’m internalizing this article and also sending it on to my best friend and my daughter – both struggling to find housing and my daughter expecting soon! I’m sure it will be helpful to them too
