  1. “Decluttering becomes less of a task and more of a practice.” I’m just realizing this. You kicked the can further down the street. My first big declutter was a one-and-done. Low and behold, after a comment about all of the stuff to look at in my home, I realized I needed declutter number two coupled with a deep clean and dramatic redecorating. Surely now I was done. But then this week… Today as I unloaded books to Little Free Library and dried goods to a nonprofit organization serving the unhoused population in the city, I chuckled. There will always be more offloading. Always. Decluttering is a lifestyle.

  2. Progress, not perfection.

My husband has a hard time letting go of stuff. I think he feels like he’s losing if stuff leaves the house for good. So I’m not going after his beloved (and stored in the back room) collection of Sunbeam kitchen mixers. We don’t use or display them, but he’s very attached.

So I won’t try to pry them out of his attachment. I’ll go for something more neutral like our suitcase collection. Or books. I don’t want to wrestle with my husband, or criticize him. So, progress, not perfection.

  3. some rules don’t work everywhere. I live in a warm country. Last year we had a warm winter, so I did not wear my winter coats. This past winter was exceptionally cold at times, so I wore them all. Had I followed the one year rule, I would have had to buy new ones. My rule for decluttering – and yes, I do declutter, constantly – do it with discretion and common sense.
