  1. After I decluttered and deep cleaned my home (which took a couple of months), I began the organizing process. There were things that I kept that were overflow. For example, my linen closet is tiny and required separate storage for extra bathroom and bedroom linen. I found inexpensive 12×12 inch felt containers at Ikea that fit nicely on the top shelf of my bedroom closet. That’s where I put them. My closet looks organized without a bunch of linens just thrown on top. I also use them in the coat closet for winter hats, scarves, gloves, and the bedroom for sentimental tee shirts.

Decanting is something I found useful for bags of grains, lentils, and beans that are shipped in flimsy packaging, ripe for rodents and bugs. I bought Weck jars to decant. I bought them because they’re sturdy, airtight, and attractive. I also bought Mason Cash jars for popcorn kernels, coffee beans, and homemade granola. They’re airtight and look pretty on the counter. No need to label. I know what’s inside.

Some items come in their own cute containers. I’m thinking of Simply Organic seasonings, Delallo organic pasta, Harney and Sons tea, Koala Eco cleaning products.

These are some of the oganizing tools that work in my home. I agree that we must all find our own way. I didn’t read any rules before organizing my kitchen, linens, clothes, and shoes. I followed my gut and enlisted the help of a friend with a spotless home regarding what would keep my newly decluttered home easily manageable. It works.

  2. Thank you!! Yes!! I agree with so many of these!! Decanting is beautiful, but just not practical! My pantry never, ever looks picture perfect… ever. But I’ve come to terms with it. And yes, I do need to declutter so many areas in my home, but I find that when people tell me how to do that, I just get grumpy about how many space is so cluttered and “how could I ever be happy or peaceful with a cluttered space?” I agree that it feels good to have a clean space, but sometimes it also feels good to just ignore the clutter and sit down and relax for a bit instead of stressing about the clutter!! Does that make any sense? Anyway, thank you for this article, it definitely brought up many things I was thinking!

    1. I am always decluttering. But these days it has slowed. Covid started it. My cleaning staff went home… then I had a shoulder operation. Cleaning staff came back! Then I had a stroke. This really put a spoke in the ops! However… I did not buy new clothes. I gave away things that did not fit. I gave away china and glassware I didn’t use.
This year I have concentrated on papers and books. The papers are slowly being debunked. My kids and friends sort though piles of books I don’t think I’ll read again.
I haven’t bought new containers, because I dump clothes into cartons. Book go into beer cartons because that’s a size that is manageable. I still have a guestroom (occupied by my carer) that is full of boxes, but they are slowly disappearing, and I think by this time next year it will be gone. Boxes not in use are folded up. I hope that eventually I will just have a rack with stuff I haven’t found place for, and not too many of those. And then I will start on those cupboards! Ruthlessly.

  3. I am in the process of decluttering my office/guest room. You are so right in your writing. I so agree. I have freed up so many containers and baskets. Found the size I needed waiting for me in the garage. Find what works for you and take your time!! The articles I read keep me inspired. Rome was NOT built or decluttered in a day!! lol! Great article!! Thank you!!

  4. Love this! Besides having ADHD, I also live in a small apartment with VERY LITTLE to no storage! So I have totally different issues. I don’t even know where to start to decorate and I have lived here for nearly 2 years

  5. I decant some things. I live alone and unless a package is airtight once opened, I put the remaining contents into a glass jar; mostly mason or ball, but pasta jars work well). This happens primarily with pasta, rice, dried beans, and grains.
    Things stay fresh longer.

  6. Decanting in my pantry is almost a must, because of fighting with mice. Everything has to be protected or it becomes mouse bate and garbage. Vammouse has helped.
