  1. Use cash. You can’t buy the $50 version of something if you only have $20. If you put it on the credit card you’ll spend that $20 somewhere else.

  2. I rely on my financial spreadsheet. I set it up, so it suits what I need to know about my money. I update it once a month.There’s the bank account sheet, with categories for different spending items. The cash sheet. And the year sheet, where I enter every month’s outgoings. It takes maybe an hour a month. And since I’ve been doing this for maybe 20 years, I can look up how things like food are changing, when rooms were last decorated, when I got capital items, etc. I don’t know anyone else who does this, but I find it a splendid system.

  3. All of the tips above are helpful, but I would like to know how the readers of this blog deal with
    unexpected expenses such as car/truck repairs beyond simple DIY, trips to the emergency room,
    or sudden needs of family requiring travel. Any input here is appreciated.–Anne
