  1. Yesterday I saw a nephrologist who spent an hour talking with me about all things medical and all things habit, and all things why his wife might leave him for Sting and why I agreed she must. He asked that I incorporate a couple habits into my routine. The first was document daily blood pressure, heart rate, and weight. The second was prepare batches of nutrient rich food at the beginning of each week so that I have easy meals on hand (no more days of eating only fruit because I’m too tired to prepare a decent meal). These I regard as change of season habits although they are lifestyle changes for life. Because I’m a compliant patient, I will do these things ritually. One of the benefits beyond physical health is that I’m building structure into my week. As a new retiree I have’t yet figured that out and have been flailing a bit, wasting time on Facebook when I should be reading or walking or practicing cello or, God forbid, writing. Marching into winter I hope to have made headway into making at least one of these a habit. Or two. I’d like them to be reading and cello, both which bring joy for no reason other than their incomparable and uncompromising beautiful.

Thank for you this blog post. It has affirmed what’s been milling around in my head since yesterday’s appointment. Here’s to autumn and the coming of winter.
