  1. I had to replace the red sofa in my living room. Actually it is a loveseat. The new one is mustard yellow. My living room is tiny. Today I took a work of abstract art to framer, a large original piece that is rich and deep and will be centerpiece of the room. While neither loveseat or painting will be delivered for another three weeks, I’m thinking about how I wish the living room to look. Clean. Remove all decor from the coffee table and the chest. No pillows or throw. Put away the cello after practice rather than laying it across the side chair. I want color to speak – the chairs, art, bindings of books on the wall of shelves. I want the room to to be inviting without smothering. Since now retired and can no longer afford the luxury of contracted cleaners, I also need as little housework as possible, which means no clutter. I’m starting to suck up minimalist thinking.

  2. This is a good summary of the different articles I have read about decluttering. I especially appreciate Anita’s comment that less clutter equals less housework. That is a big motivator to get and stay serious.

  3. I am just waiting for my daughter to buy a house and take all my furniture with her then I can get rid of a lot more stuff and really declutter better. Being disabled doesn’t help as I have 9 walking canes dotted around the home for easy access. A zimmerframe, a Walker, 2 different leg exercisers as I am not able to stand for long so sitting down a lot I use the leg exercisers, I have my frame for putting on compression garments as I have lymphoedema. Both leg exercisers are different which is why I have 2. The home has been decluttered 85% so improving over 25years of decluttering. My kitchen is the problem. MY new pans are heavy as my hands have deteriorated with arthritis so I have had to purchase lighter one’s. Most of my purchases are due to declining health and needs changing. But I am working on it. Good article.

  4. I have already donated about 7 bags of clothes, and pocketbooks + backpacks plus my daughter has also donated bags of clothes and 2 of books.
We also have a set of China to donate and a desk some canes and a rollator.

  5. I gave the electric ice cream maker to the nonprofit thrift store. Bought it two years ago and haven’t used it since. Hard to do; it was a high-end appliance. But maybe somewhere, someone else is using it 🙂

  6. At 82 I ‘m healthy and sane thanks to minimalism. Reside in a town where everything is accessible by walking. No car.
Smartphone for pleasure. knowledge and communication. Vegan diet. Happy marriage.
